Download the AWLS Instructors Manual by clicking on the textbook to the left. This will give you instruction, hints and helps on operating a successful AWLS course.

WHAT SUBJECTS DO I TEACH

AWLS - The AWLS course is designed for learners with a medical background. The curriculum is outlined on the AWLS Outline page. But what is most important, is that students learn the subject well. Giving a powerpoint lecture does not ensure that learners understand the subjects. They need to study. Students should study the AWLS subjects prior to your course, or study those subject afterwards from our site. You will use the powerpoint lectures to reinforce topics. You will also need to teach practical skills. How to do this is found in the videos on practical skills on our site. You can use what format works best for your students.

Backpacking Medicine - The Backpacking Medicine is a very popular course worldwide. The curriculum is outlined on the Backpacking Medicine Outline page. Students should study the Backpacking subjects prior to your course, or study those subject afterwards from our site. You will use the powerpoint lectures to reinforce topics.

BWLS - This course is designed for all who go into the backcountry. It emphasizes the most common sports and activities the people perform while in the outdoors and helps prevent and treat injuries. The curriculum is outlined on the BWLS Outline page. Students should study the subjects prior to your course, or study those subject afterwards from our site. You will use the powerpoint lectures to reinforce topics.

Wilderness Travel and Tropical Medicine - This course is for those who travel into other part of the planet where tropical medicines abound. Wilderness travel often takes people into these places.

Search and Rescue - The SAR course is to provide the foundation material for various SAR teams. Depending upon your learners needs you will use this as the base to teach lost person behavior and search techniques and incident command. Rope, river, sear and forest rescue will will add on your own.

BACKCOUNTRY EXPERIENCE TRAINING

TRAINING/PREPARING

One excellent way to teach wilderness medicine is to integrate our material into your backcountry or wilderness medicine experience that you provide for your participants. For example, if you are taking people on a trek, pre studying with the Backpacking course will provide them with an excellent background of medicine for their trek You can solidify teaching as you hike. If you are taking medical professionals down a river, studying the AWLS material first will enhance their trip.

You need to learn the material before you teach. Other instructors that teach for you will need to do this also. Our AWLS podcasts are an excellent resource for you to learn what to teach any of the subjects. The practice tests will also help you to learn the material and answer your learner’s questions. You should also certify in the subjects that you are going to teach

HOW DO STUDENTS LEARN?

Students learn differently, so we have provided multiple platforms for them to learn. Your lecturing is one way is an excellent way to learn. They can ask questions in real time. Learners need to study prior to their coming to your class. This means that they should know the subject before your instruction. The textbook, podcasts, powerpoint lectures, and practices will help you to teach your students.

We will provide you with teaching materials. But you can use your own materials as well. This works because all learners will study from our resource site (www.awls.online also called www.wildmedu.org) and certify on our site.  That way educational quality is controlled. Learners will start to study prior to attending your course.

HOW DO LEARNERS CERTIFY?
